RECREATION

Walking

The Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean offer some of the most exciting and beautiful terrain and scenery for walking in the country. All three of our properties have quiet lanes or footpaths right next to them allowing you to walk virtually endlessly direct from your door.

We all have local maps and knowledge of the area and can advise you of walks suited to your requirements. If you are feeling ambitious you can embark on all or part of some of the long distance walks that come within half a mile of each of the properties:-

By special arrangement it may be possible to organise a walk lead by one of the owners to special or little known places.

A local group called the Parish Grasslands Project has produced two leaflets of walks around St Briavels and Brockweir. These are well illustrated, clear and easy to use and provide an instant way to discover some of the local scenery and landmarks.

Cycling

Cycling is a popular activity along the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. Some of the long distance cycle routes pass through St Briavels, and the Forest of Dean is renowned as a centre for mountain biking - choose between easy flattish cycling on disused railway lines or hair-raising downhill tracks through forest.

Bikes can be hired from Wye Valley Hire in Symonds Yat or the Pedalabikeaway Cycle Centre in the heart of the forest.

Fishing

The River Wye is a beautiful place to fish and there are private owners who will hire out stretches of the river. For salmon and trout the best fishing is to be had north of Hay-on-Wye.

Angling is very popular on many of the lakes in the Forest and there are tackle shops in many of the major towns. For further information contact the Forest of Dean Angling Club.

Canoeing and boating

Canoeing is a major activity on the Wye. The best location is at Symonds Yat, less than half an hours drive away. Launch your own canoe at Kerne Bridge or hire everything at Symonds Yat Canoe Hire or Wyedean Canoe and Adventure Centre.

For a more sedate way of enjoying the river try boating. Take a trip in a cruiser with Kingfisher Cruises from the Saracens Head at Symonds Yat.
