The Old Goat House nestles on the slopes of the Wye Valley, approached via a ¼ mile drive partly along the line of an ancient dyke from where there are wonderful views northwards across the Wye Valley. Set in 5 acres, Rosemesne, the main house, is surrounded by paddocks (grazed by our four sheep, geese, ducks and hens) and woodlands, where walks can lead downhill to the river at Bigsweir a mile away or uphill through the Hudnalls woods towards The Offa's Dyke Path just ½ a mile away.
Badgers can be watched at dusk in these ancient woods, bats can be seen in the garden, tawny owls call from our woods, and buzzards can usually be seen and heard overhead. The Lower Meend itself is a collection of about 20 scattered dwellings below the village of St Briavels on the edge of The Forest of Dean. with two pubs providing food, an art gallery, a Norman church (often hosting concerts) and the 13th century castle.
The Old Goat House is a converted stone stable close to the main house which has its own stone-walled small garden (with seating area) facing away from the main house towards the orchard where the hens roam. The main room which includes the sleeping area, is spacious and light and includes an additional sofa bed. There is wheelchair access.
"The Old Goat House is in a beautiful location, we'll miss stepping out into the woods for an early morning dog walk. It is ideally placed to explore a whole range of different environments from the popular steeply wooded Wye Valley to the miles of forest trails in the Forest of Dean and then into the rolling hills of Wales. The local pub in St Briavels, the George, does fantastic pub grub and is worth the uphill walk! It was lovely to arrive after a four hour journey to find local organic butter, bread, milk, tea and homemade cake all laid out by Tony and Jane. Thank you for a lovely stay, we'll be recommending you to our friends."
"An excellent holiday in a very well appointed property. Extremely well provisioned, comfortable and in a lovely setting."
"Just to say thank you for helping to make my stay here a happy one. You made me very welcome. This is a beautiful spot and I wish you luck with the future lettings. I will recommend you to others!"
